India is on the brink of a smartphone industry revolution, similar to China’s rapid rise a decade ago, according to Nothing Co-Founder and CEO Carl Pei. In a recent tweet, Pei emphasized India’s potential for global leadership, citing the government’s push for local manufacturing, a thriving tech ecosystem, and an expanding consumer base.
“India today stands where China was a decade ago in the smartphone industry—on the verge of a major revolution,” Pei wrote. He also highlighted the government’s initiatives to support homegrown mobile brands, further solidifying India’s position in the market.
Pei’s remarks underscore Nothing’s strategic focus on India, which has already become the company’s largest market. As China’s smartphone growth slows, Pei sees India as the next major hub for innovation and expansion. “Now that the China story is slowing down a lot, I am very bullish on India,” he said in an earlier interview.
Nothing’s growth in India has been remarkable. In Q3 2024, the brand saw an unprecedented 510% year-over-year increase in shipments, making it the fastest-growing smartphone company in the region. This is significant in a market where Chinese brands hold nearly 80% share, with Samsung and Apple occupying smaller portions.
Since launching in 2021, Nothing has gained traction with its transparent design philosophy and premium mid-range devices. The 2022 release of Phone (1) marked a turning point, and the company continues to leverage India’s booming demand to solidify its presence. Pei’s latest statements reinforce Nothing’s ambition to lead India’s smartphone transformation, positioning itself at the forefront of the country’s tech evolution.
