Alex Williamson, the former CEO of House of Fraser and Inspiring Learning, has been appointed as Scottish Rugby’s new chief executive. His appointment follows a year-long recruitment process to find a successor for Mark Dodson, who held the position for 13 years. Williamson brings a strong financial background, having held senior roles at Ernst & Young, Warner Music, and TUI.
Williamson is expected to take up the role before Christmas, although it may extend to February 2024. He steps into the position at a crucial time for Scottish Rugby, with the organization reporting significant financial losses of £10.6 million and ongoing challenges in player development and grassroots engagement.
Among Williamson’s top priorities will be addressing the financial concerns, particularly around revenue generation during the Six Nations and other major events. A focus on modernizing fan engagement and venue experiences has been suggested as a potential avenue for boosting revenue.
In collaboration with David Nucifora, who recently joined in an advisory role, Williamson will also spearhead efforts to overhaul Scotland’s player pathway system, which has faced significant criticism. Another key area of focus will be strengthening relationships with local rugby clubs, many of which are struggling with financial difficulties and declining player numbers.
Williamson expressed optimism about Scotland’s future in rugby, saying, “There are many opportunities ahead, and I see no reason why Scotland cannot continue to be a positive force in the world game.” His leadership will also be pivotal in executing a comprehensive 10-year strategy for the development of the sport at all levels, including the women’s game, which has seen substantial progress in recent years.
As Scotland prepares for its Six Nations opener in February 2024, Williamson’s leadership will be under close scrutiny as he seeks to stabilize the organization and drive success on and off the field.
