Former U.S. President Donald Trump stirred controversy on Friday after promoting a false endorsement from JPMorgan Chase CEO, Jamie Dimon, for his 2024 presidential campaign. The post, shared on Trump’s Truth Social platform, displayed a photograph of Dimon alongside the headline: “New: Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, has endorsed Trump for President.”
The post, shared around 1800 GMT, appears to have been a repost from another social media account. However, within hours, JPMorgan spokesperson Joe Evangelisti clarified that the report was entirely untrue, stating in an email to AFP, “Jamie has not endorsed a candidate.”
This isn’t the first time Trump has shared misleading information during the campaign. In August, he reposted doctored images of pop star Taylor Swift falsely indicating her support for him. Swift, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump, later responded by endorsing his opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, and warning against the dangers of AI-generated misinformation.
Despite Dimon’s team debunking the claim, the fake endorsement remained visible on Trump’s Truth Social page as of 1700 GMT, further intensifying concerns over the spread of misinformation in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election.
