Matalan Appoints H&M UK Chief Henrik Nordvall as CEO to Lead Next Growth Phase

Matalan has announced that Henrik Nordvall, currently the UK and Ireland CEO of H&M, will take the helm as its new Chief Executive Officer starting February 2026. The move marks a significant leadership shift for the Merseyside-based fashion and homeware retailer, as it prepares for what it describes as an “exciting journey” ahead.

Nordvall brings with him 17 years of experience at H&M, having worked in various international markets before assuming leadership of the UK and Ireland division. Under his watch, H&M’s regional operations generated revenues of approximately $1.5 billion, showcasing his proven track record in steering large-scale retail operations in competitive markets.

In a statement, Nordvall expressed enthusiasm about joining Matalan. “I am thrilled to become part of Matalan’s journey. The brand has a clear purpose—delivering everyday style, quality, and value to families—and I’m excited to contribute to its continued growth,” he said.

Founded in the 1980s by John Hargreaves, Matalan has grown to become one of the North West’s most recognised retail names. Today, it operates around 265 stores across the UK and international markets. In recent years, the company has invested in modernising its store portfolio and enhancing its digital infrastructure to keep pace with evolving consumer habits.

The business reported a strong first half of the current financial year, with EBITDA rising 69% to £34 million for the six months ending August 30. This growth was driven by tighter cost control and improved margins, according to the company. Notably, stores that underwent recent upgrades outperformed others in the estate by 14%, signalling the success of its ongoing refresh strategy.

When Nordvall officially assumes his role in early 2026, Matalan’s current executive chairman, Karl-Heinz Holland, will step back into his original role as chairman of the board. Holland praised Nordvall’s appointment, citing his “deep retail knowledge and international leadership experience” as valuable assets to guide Matalan’s future.

As Matalan continues its transformation efforts amidst a highly competitive retail landscape, the appointment of a seasoned executive like Nordvall signals the company’s commitment to accelerating its growth, enhancing customer experience, and strengthening its market position both online and in stores.
