Simon Trott Named CEO of Rio Tinto, Replacing Jakob Stausholm

Global mining giant Rio Tinto has appointed Simon Trott, head of its iron ore division, as its new Chief Executive Officer. Trott will officially assume the role on August 25, succeeding Jakob Stausholm, who announced his departure in May after four years at the helm.

Stausholm became CEO in 2020 during a turbulent period for the company, marked by intense scrutiny over the destruction of the sacred Juukan Gorge rock shelters in Australia. His tenure included strategic moves into lithium and expansion in iron ore and copper.

A 20-year Rio Tinto veteran, Trott previously served as Chief Commercial Officer and recently led the launch of the company’s largest iron ore mine in over a decade in Western Australia. He is currently overseeing a significant program to replace declining production volumes in the region.

Despite his leadership achievements, Trott has faced investor criticism over declining ore quality and challenges meeting production targets. His appointment comes at a critical juncture as Rio Tinto navigates market ppressures and aims to strengthen its global mining portfolio.
